In small family gardens, the winter garden usually arrives when we start to remove the summer one. However, if we want to make our own nursery and have a good plan to harvest the different vegetables throughout the year, then we will start it in the middle of summer.
The Mallorcan saying goes like this: If you want a good cabbage, sow it in July..
Traditionally, in Mallorca, the winter garden was started around July by planting cabbages and cauliflowers. They were then taken to the field towards the end of August or the beginning of September. If you have done good planning and a good alternation of varieties, we can start harvesting the first ones in September. seven-week-old drunken cabbages and we will end up harvesting the last ones Easter cauliflowers o drunken cabbages within the month of April of the following year.
To make good planning, you need to know well what we will consume throughout the cold months, what cycle each crop and each variety has, how much space it will take up, its water needs...
Once we have to remove the summer remains or if the garden is large, in that space we have to make the winter garden, we can incorporate organic matter and aerate the soil. We can start to put in the soil the cabbages, the lettuces...and we will also start with direct sowing of those varieties that suit us best, such as purple carrot, the Majorcan radish, the Majorcan parsley or the black beans.
