On January 11th we held the conference “Sweet Acorn and other forest foods”, at the CEFOR Menut Forestry Center (Escorca), as part of the SWEET OLIVE OAK training cycle.
It consisted of a presentation of the Project for the recovery and multiplication of local varieties of sweet acorn oak, by Andreu Adrover. President of the AVL. This initiative has the support of the Mallorca Preservation Foundation, the Estel de Llevant Foundation, the UIB and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment. Carles Cardona, technical manager of the CEFOR guided the attendees through the facilities of the forest nursery, which reproduces the oak, among other species.
Next it was Joan Montserrat's turn, in charge of the Tarragona nursery BalanoTrees, who talked about the botanical and gastronomic importance of acorns. The day was completed with two workshops tasting foods made from acorns. On the one hand, Uta Gritschke gave us a taste of delicious preparations made with sour acorns, which go through a transformation process into edible flour. To end the day, the Balearic Islands node of the Eixarcolant Collective He guided us through a tasting of four products made from acorns, including a granola and a nougat, which the students tasted and evaluated.
